Merge / Split
Merge 2 subtitle files (when joining 2 movies into one) or split one
file into 2 files (e.g. when splitting movie to fit on 2 CDs). The
functions are performed by clicking on appropriate buttons.
Merge
The settings for Merge are:
- First subtitles length - Move
second subtitles by this length (length of first movie part)
- Second subtitles offset - Adjust
second subtitles position
The Automatic values button allows to
automatically determine values of these fields. The presets are:
- Movie length as 1 subs length -
fill the movie length into the First subtitles length field, put zero
in the Offset field
- First subtitle of second subs start at
current position - fill the current movie position into the
Length field, fill the negative value of the start time of the first
subtitle in second file to the Offset field. For example the current
position in the movie is 50000 Fr., the first subtitle of the second
file starts at Fr. 125. The values will be: Length=50000, Offset=-125.
Merging subtitles requires the knowledge of the movie's language.
You need to know where the first subtitle of the second file should
start in the movie. When I am merging subtitle files, I use these steps:
- Load both subtitle files (first subtitles should be already
synchronized with the movie) and the movie.
- Jump to the start of the last subtitle in the first file and mark
it.
- Play the movie and carefully listen to the sound until the
characters say their lines in the first subtitle of the second file
- Using bookmarks and precision seeks find the exact point where
this subtitle starts.
- Use the First subtitle of second subs
start at current position preset to fill-in the correct values.
- Merge the subtitles.
- Play the movie and further listen to verify correct positions.
- If the subtitles are slightly sooner or later, select all
subtitles after the marked one (step 2) and move them properly.
Split
There is only one option:
- Split point - Subtitles with
Start greater than split point will be moved to second subtitle file
